South Fork Nature CenterSummer Schedule2010
Sat, May 29 7:45p.m.-10:00p.m. Memorial weekend--NIGHT PROWL
Participants will meet just before sunset in front of the log cabin for campfire-roasted marshmallows, soft drinks, and a brief introduction to South Fork Nature Center and the Riddle Cabin. Docents Kay and Bob Verboon will lead the group along a one-mile trail through the woods and along low bluffs of Greer’s Ferry Lake. Kay is a former park ranger at a Louisiana state prehistoric Indian site. Bob’s background includes science, agriculture, and taxidermy; he teaches in the Clinton School District. Kay says, “You’ll meet your nocturnal neighbors, and use your senses of smell, hearing, and touch to get an understanding of how these animals see in the dark. Participants should bring flashlights. If you have one with a red light, that is ideal to maintain better night vision; if you don’t, red cellophane will be provided for everyone to use. Wear good sturdy walking shoes; white ones are easier to see in the dark if you’re following someone. The trail is flat and relatively easy, but some hikers might like to bring walking sticks for added security.
Sat, June 19 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. TREES, BEES AND EDIBLE WEEDS
Trees, Bees & Edible Weeds—Dr. Jim Solomon; entomologist, Kay Verboon; guide, and Shirley Pratt, herbalist will help hikers along the trail find edible weeds, butterflies and insects.
Sat, July 17 9:00a.m.-11:00a.m. ART OF NATURE CLASS
An interactive nature sketching and painting session will be held on Saturday, July 17th, at the South Fork Nature Center, Choctaw. This is the third in the “Art of Nature” series. Participants will meet outdoors at the picnic tables in front of the log cabin at 9 a.m. Docent Joyce Hartmann will give a watercolor demonstration to show techniques of painting a landscape. After the demonstration, participants can draw, paint, or sketch natural subjects around them, and Joyce will help them accomplish their goals. All levels of artistic ability are welcome; all persons attending will be encouraged to try to draw or paint subjects in nature. Persons will need to furnish their own materials: pencils, brushes, paints, paper or canvas.
