Perfect outdoor weather plus an outdoor cooking class plus 24 friendly, hungry people equals an awesome experience for students at Clinton High School! Mr. Marlin Partney had the gear and supplies for all of us to cook cobbler in a Dutch Oven and our meal in a foil pack. Mr. Partney is active in Scouts, hiking, camping, and teaching his favorite topic “Leave No Trace”. We also hiked the trails, led by student docents, and had an interesting presentation by Hilda Littleton about Indian customs and survival techniques. Thank you, everyone who helped make it an amazing day in the forest.
Archey Creek Restoration Tour
At the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22, the Nature Conservancy team gave a tour of the restoration project which has now passed the halfway mark.
The Nature Conservancy of Arkansas has undertaken a multi-stage stream restoration project of the Upper Little Red River area, headed by Joy DeClerk and sponsored in part by Southwestern Energy. Chamber members and interested residents visited with the team about the process and walked the areas of the stream at different stages of completion.
The conservation work is rebuilding & reinforcing the streambed to prevent erosion & mitigate flooding in the conservation area and along adjacent properties. The improved channel will allow a clear flow to Greers Ferry Lake with reduced sediment.
The program will also focus on replanting the banks with native species and regenerating the eco-system of the river.

This 3 1/2 minute video shows a time-lapse of a similar restoration done by the NCA team in Garland County.

Stop, Listen, Look Up
by Docent Bob Hartmann
Cool, clear, almost cloudless skies are a delightful feature of fall weather fronts, particularly when you STOP, LISTEN and LOOK UP. With these fronts comes migratory waterfowl traveling the winds of opportunity to get an almost free ride SOUTH. So if you are out in the morning or through the afternoon LOOK UP and LISTEN to the silence in a place away from traffic, lawnmowers, boat motors, chainsaws, cows or maybe crows, whether it be on South Fork Nature Center trails, in your back yard or in the ‘deer woods’.
Cup your hands behind each ear and swing your head in a slow arc north to south. At first you may think their voices are your imagination, then you know it’s the ‘cacklers’, White-fronted Geese (aka Speckle Bellies) constantly talking to one another as they cruise the heights in their broad
V-shaped skeins. Look hard and thoroughly; in a bright blue sky they are almost invisible at their altitude! Their next stop may be a harvested grain field, a playa or a shallow slough to refuel for another leg of their journey.
On the Beach Again
by Docent Don Culwell
Eighty two degrees under a sunny sky, a salty ocean smell in the air, and toes wiggling into the sand…once more Don Culwell opened up bags of Coquina Clam shells, broken pieces of large Sand Dollars, Venus Clams, and sea sponges to show kids and adults (40-50 of them) Florida’s Living Beach. A live Coquina Clam kept burrowing into the dish of wet sand…several kids brought up living Olive Snails, a Hermit Crab, and a number of Mole Crabs that scooted backwards fast as they were lifted from the pail of sand.
And it all happened right at the edge of the Fort Walton Beach surf…biology class (for the second year in a row) out in the ecosystem where the most complex beach organism is man himself. Wow, what a “teachable moment!”
Hot time at Downtown Clinton Chili Cookoff

Daniel Silva cooked a MEAN…HOT…Pot of Chili for South Fork at the Chili Cook off Saturday, Oct 5th Downtown Clinton. Unfortunately, it just fell short of winning that trophy. Let’s go for the win next year! Thank you Chef Daniel for all your hard work and those home grown Habanero
Peppers!
A special thanks to Arkansas Bank and Trust for sponsoring South Fork by paying the entrance fee.

Greers Ferry Dam 50th Anniversary Dedication
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Greers Ferry Dam by President John F. Kennedy. The dam marked the birth of our beautiful Greers Ferry Lake – the natural centerpiece of Van Buren county. Thousands of attendees joined the celebration at the JFK Overlook in Heber Springs, with music by the 106th Army Band and guest speakers commemorating the event, including Governor Mike Beebe & former president Bill Clinton.
